This is for my blog friends who don’t know already. (It’ll also come through on Facebook and I don’t know how to prevent that.)
Lena passed away Thursday morning. We’ll miss her, but life’s so short, before you know it, it will be our turn. Even 30 years will seem a short time.
Here’s the obit. And I lifted a the picture her family used on Facebook to announce her memorial service. Hope they don’t mind.

SYLAGAUGA – Lena Strickland Taylor, age 61, mother of three, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2009. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, September 15, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. at Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or the The Arc of South Talladega County, P.O. Box 360, Sylacauga, Alabama, 35150.
A 1970 graduate of Presbyterian College who later received a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Lena loved to serve others. She was a special education teacher, a flight attendant with Pan American Airlines, a Sunday School teacher of special needs children, a volunteer with the local Humane Society and an elementary school counselor.
She loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She loved to read mysteries, watch old movies, travel and search for treasures at yard sales.
Lena was preceded in death by her father, James T. Strickland Sr. and is survived by her husband of 34 years, Timothy R. Taylor; their three children, son Matthew R. Taylor and his wife, Martie Orton Taylor; son Joshua J. Taylor and daughter, Katherine M. Taylor. She is also survived by her mother, Lena W. Strickland of Atlanta and her brother, James T. Strickland Jr., his wife Maryann of Alpharetta, Ga., and their four children and two grandchildren.

Oh Wanda, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your dear friend. What a beautiful face, and a beautiful smile. My heart aches with yours. Just know that you are in my thoughts and in my prayers. I’m going down the street now, to hug my best friend Steph. I cannot imagine the depth of sorrow her family must be experiencing…God Bless them all. Elaine
I am sooo sorry about Lena. I hate C. I was tickled you visited The Vintage Nest and hope you’ll be back often. I loved reading your blog. It is so chatty and from the heart. Don’t be a stranger.
I am so sorry to hear about your dear friend, Lena. She sounds like a lovely person inside and out, and I know that you’ll miss her. I think she must’ve been a fighter, too, but it’s so comforting to know that she’s with the Lord. I like to think that she will be able to look down and see that new little granddaughter when she arrives in October. God bless you and all her family.
Wanda, how well I remember that beautiful garden room at your shop. I see that I must make a trip to Sylacauga SOON cause I see lots of eye candy, like that wonderful long shelf standing on its end!
Thank you for asking about my mom. Things are moving along as smoothly as can be right now and I hope we don’t hit any bumps in the road but if we do, we’ll deal with them then. I called her this afternoon and she wasn’t in her room….when I finally reached her, she’d been playing bingo! Said she bingoed twice and won .50 each game….she’s doing great!
Lots of love,
Judy
Hi, Wanda. I was just searching the Internet for things about Lena and found your site. I’m sure you miss her as much as I do. Thanks for writing about her. Jayne
